Context to why Stevie dumped him as soon as he could..
He’s probably giving up on hockey and playing fortnight cause hockey not in the winged wheel isn’t the same.
But In all seriousness, I hope he’s doing OK and he gets the help he needs in whatever issues he’s having. I loved that guy on our team, was really sad to see him go.
Posting this, Larkin seems to potentially address Walman in his training camp interview at the start of the season. Skip to 4:25
A post from the main hockey subreddit popped into my feed the other day about how Wings fans were happy to see Walman struggling. I think/hope that isn’t true – it isn’t for me, anyway. Between these reports and Larkin talking about some guys not being focused/committed during the late-season road trip, it does maybe offer an explanation about why Yzerman moved Walman and had to add a sweetener. I’m not sure the general rule/protocol for GM’s when making trades, but I would imagine they inform each other of any potential off-ice issues, otherwise you might start to develop a reputation as someone who isn’t forthcoming with details.
The thought at the time was that Yzerman needed to clear space for Seider and Raymond, for potential free agents and eventually the possibility of trading for Trouba. That he’d saddled himself with so many bad deals on defense that Walman was the only guy outside of Mo with any value, that the league saw he was in a bind and so he had to pay to move his contract. While there’s still truth to having some bad deals on the team, it seems there was more to it than Yzerman feeling like he was backed into a corner and making a rash move.
But no, I’m not happy. Truthfully, I’d rather have a healthy and focused Walman over anyone not named Seider, Edvinsson and maybe Johansson (hoping someone within the organization steps up as ASP’s future defensive partner). It’s a bummer things didn’t work out here and I hope he figures out whatever potential off-ice issues he’s seemingly going through at the moment.
Piling on Stevie becos clearly we would’ve won the frickin’ cup if we had kept Wally.
Stories like this show how damn fickle the hockey crowd is. This sub was up in arms when he was “the second best defenseman in hockey” after a 4-point night 3 games in.
Stop trying to fire Yzerman. He’s better at this than all of us.
