That sucks, but oh well. We still have our talent and Boch at the helm. Just creates an opportunity for someone better to step in.

  2. Honestly a bigger let down to me than any trade that could’ve happened or free agent walking. I don’t know the front office’s thought process so I’m not going full doomer, but I have a hard time imagining a good scenario now once Bochy retires. I was so excited for Venable to take over after shadowing the best of the best. If we get stuck in another Woodward situation, might as well go ahead and slam the damn window shut.

  3. As a Ranger fan I have to say the White Sox are very lucky. He has been groomed by the greatest manager of all time to take over the Rangers. After passing last year he accepted a position this year and I have to believe it’s because he knows how good the pitching talent in the WS farm system is. Good for you Chicago, you got a good one.

  4. I really thought he would be our next manager after Boch, why on earth would he go to the white Sox? He was all but guaranteed a managerial position here in an organization that’s in much better shape. I hope it works out for him, I just don’t understand it

  5. White sox fan here but my question seems to have been answered by how down you guys seem about losing him. We’re glad it wasn’t Nevin but Venable has a very large ask ahead of him. If he gets the sox to even remotely resemble a competent baseball team we might build him a statue.

  6. Guess Boch is gonna have to go full Connie Mack. Or we just hire Will away/trade whatever, from Chicago in a year.

  7. Here me out on this…

Adrian Beltre signed as Venable’s replacement.

Bochy signs a 1 year extension through 2026.

Adrian Beltre takes over in 2027.

  8. Honestly, I never got the idea that Venable was a lock to be The Next Great Manager. Managerial prospects flame out just as often as players do. Gabe Kapler flamed out as both. When Bochy’s done (no time soon, I suspect), there will be other promising coaches to take a chance on.

  9. Personally I believe Bochy is gonna receive an extension. After the season ended, Bochy and CY did a media day and were asked a ton of questions.

When a reporter asked Boch about his upcoming contract situation and if he’d continue baseball once it was over he said this:
    >“I’m still hungry to get back. Yeah, I’m disappointed, just like all of us. That’s why I got back in the game,” Bochy said Tuesday. “That’s what drives me. It’s still there, and that’s where I’m at right now. … We’re working to get this thing back to where we want to be, and that’s getting back to the postseason and winning the championship.”

Maybe it’s been known he wants an extension. If that’s the case, then I understand Will not wanting to wait any longer. There are only 30 managerial positions in baseball and there’s no better team than the White Sox to start working on your accolades. If Will turns that team around that will be seen as a great accomplishment to start his career.

Plus, that door is surely open for Will later down the road. It’s not like he’s permanently gone. Will and CY were teammates and classmates and it’s never a bad thing to see your organization give you opportunities to excel in your field.

Maybe CY has someone in mind that can be Boch’s new assistant manager. Maybe Boch does stay for a year or two and gives a new guy the Will treatment.
