What’s the current status of baseball in the Olympics? I swear I heard a story that they were considering removing it at some point.
As others have said here before, just make the All Star break longer, and move the start and/or end dates of the season to compensate.
Nothing like Shohei taking an olympic opportunity away from some kids. Sad, really.
I wonder if it’s ridiculously expensive to insure a pitcher’s contract for a tournament like that.
If Ohtani wants to go, there’s no way on Gods green earth that the union will stop him.
The long term gain could well outpace the short term loss
If realized, the whole of Japan will go wild.
Start the season a week early. Ditch the ASG. Have a 10 day event w 4 days rest on the backend.
Option 2. What team wins the NCAA Div 1 is the Olympic team or a mix of top 5 schools.
After this years summer Olympics I don’t think anyone can deny the importance of the games anymore, the NBA has grown into a fully international sports league because of how much effort they’ve put into the Olympics. MLB needs to not fumble this opportunity.
If the pros take the Olympic break, that means Dodger Stadium becomes available for games. What’s a bigger moment for baseball than 56,000 screaming people at a US vs Japan gold medal final, live in prime time on NBC? Yamamoto vs Skenes with national pride on the line sounds like ratings to me.
If you want to make baseball more global, it will be the perfect opportunity to do it.
really? that’d be a big change tho
wait imagine during the election the news was just like this aaand the projected winner of wisconsin– A HIGH DRIVE TO DEEP RIGHT FIELD
tho honestly the WBC is all I care about
did y’all hear about the conditions at the paris olympics?
God damn we are so lucky that this guy is the face of the sport.
BRING BACK Scheduled DOUBLEHEADERS
This gots to happen. Take a break from the MLB season to play in LA for your country.
This makes too much sense not to do. Bring the stars of the game to represent their countries in one of the cathedrals of the game at Dodger Stadium for Olympic gold.
It’s going to be a very long time before MLB gets this opportunity to show it’s product to the rest of the world again, we can skip the All Star Game and add some scheduled doubleheaders to make this work
It will never happen because FOX will never allow the All Star week to be canceled.
Honestly though, this seems like pure envy from the players. They see Lebron and the other NBA in the parade and think to themselves ‘I want that too’.
If Ohtani wants it, you sure as hell they’ll bend over backwards to make it happen for him.
Anyways, LET’S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO
Ok well you know they’re doing it now
This should say Trout and Harper not Judge and Harper. Maybe I’m still just bitter about it but it’s nothing against Judge. I just hate how he told “sources” that he was interested in the next WBC/international baseball thing after the Trout and Ohtani moment and everyone keeps talking about it. Like good for Judge to be in it for sure but Harper has always talked about it and Trout helped a lot to put together the WBC USA team. Idk I just don’t want Judge to be captain and get a bunch of credit for nothing maybe I just sound horrible here but it bugged me a lot when it happened and now all these articles always put Judge in it like he did something when it was Trout and Harper that pushed a lot.
The MLB plays during the summer. We’d have to cancel the MLB. It’ll never work its a stupid idea. It’s STUPID.
I feel like the issue is going to be the pitchers. With all of the innings limits and frequency of injuries, that’s going to be a Pandora’s box of issues.
Owners will probably tell players to go ahead and play and if the players get hurt, the owners won’t be paying a dime of those contracts. Players will have to push back and negotiate some kind of protection for themselves or take out some kind of insurance policy through the union and/or the USOC to protect their salaries if they get hurt in the Olympics.
Manfred would be an idiot to not push for this
Could bring in so many more viewers
Just do double headers on Saturdays or Sundays to make up the games.
It would be really exciting if the US and Japan faced off in the finals and the US won.
Olympic baseball is a dumb idea since the wbc is already a thing. If anything it just devalues the wbc. The olympics should not be for professional team sports like this.
Man tony Clark is my favorite player
I am less sympathetic to the cause. I think the Olympics could go without major leaguers and be just fine.
So… are we all in agreement that Ohtani is the best baseball player in the league right now? Including the fact hes the only 2-way player in the league currently (And the first I honestly ever seen)
What would a potential line up in 2028 of Americans even look like? Obviously hard to tell exactly without knowing how some top prospects end up
It has been fantastic for basketball and hockey. I’d love it if MLB allowed players to go to the Olympics.
Honestly fuck the Olympics. It’s such a corrupt shit show and we already have the WBC.
Olympics should be reserved for shit like running fast and throwing javelins in some country that has oil money instead of human rights.
Iknow that it would be cool to see all of these international super teams, but that’s what the WBC is for. I still believe that the Olympics should be for talented amateurs at the top of their game.
Shohei realized Yama is one upping him with a gold medal and couldn’t let that go without getting his own.
I thought it was going to be in the LA Olympics as part of the set of local sports that got it in the Tokyo games?
If you say no, Ohtani would straight up release himself to play unironically
It’s best they work this out ASAP, as the official baseball venues have not been named yet. Obviously Dodger Stadium will be the main venue, as the Dodgers organization has been supportive of the LA Olympic bid committee prior to Los Angeles being selected as host, but the formalities are still on hold until the MLB can work out what to do in 2028. There will also be a number of other MLB stadiums used for preliminary rounds, with Angel Stadium, Petco Park and possibly Oracle Park, Chase Field and the proposed Las Vegas baseball stadium in the mix.
I think the best solution for the schedule would be to start the season earlier and just have all the west coast and dome teams at home for a week or two. Then cancel the ASG.
They can’t really add time to the end of the season. Can’t have snow delays for the World Series.
Ohtani is the leader the MLB needed that Trout just wasn’t.
