Even after a fairly quiet week last week, TJ remains the favorite to win the DPOY on FanDuel, Draftkings, and Bet365.

Is the media making up for robbing his last season by giving him the award for this season?

The funny thing is, he doesn’t even probably deserve to win it this year. I’d prefer someone like Hendrickson over him just because of the relative impact on his team. He’s been quite literally the only pass rush on the Bengals and he’s still getting mad production.
Stuff like this though – just proves that the award is a popularity contest and not really driven by actual stats and production. Someone probably arbitrarily decided it was bad form to give someone an award two years in a row and then it became an unwritten rule.
Last year he led in every category and didn’t win it. This year there’s other guys who have better numbers but TJ’s the odds on favorite. Not that I’m *mad* about him being the favorite, but it just doesn’t really make sense.
Even though he deserves it….Chances are he won’t cause we always get the shit end of the stick
I think he deserves DPOY and Tomlin deserves COTY but if one wins, it’ll cost the other one.
I think it comes down to the fact that we are being seen as Super Bowl contenders. Last few years we hung around but weren’t seen as a playoff threat, so he didn’t win.
Same thing is happening with Hendrickson this year. Leading the league in sacks but they aren’t winning.
Let’s check how many hypothetical sacks Garrett has before we give Watt any awards
Last year it went to myles despite the stats. The “blue chip” edge rushers aren’t having a ton of success other than Hutch who got hurt. Myles, crosby, and bosa all have around the same amount of sacks as TJ.
Hendrickson has been phenomenal but the bengals defense is atrocious. Chris Jones might deserve it but has half as many sacks as TJ. TJ got snubbed last year and the impact of his strip sacks is enough to keep him in first place.
Those odds seem crazy to me… As much as I hope TJ wins it, putting money down at -200 is nuts. There’s a lot of football left to be played.
He’s got 2+ men holding and chipping him every single play. I get that sacks, tfls, and ints are tangible statistics but pff considers double blocks and chips as an offense seriously going out of their way to stop one specific defender. Sure Trey is great. So is Maxx. But they don’t require the entire offense plus hoping nobody gets a holding penalty keep contained. If the Steelers did Trey the way everyone is doing TJ this season, we easily score 40 on the bungles defense
Even if he wins it, I wouldn’t show up to the ceremony. After Garret had it handed to him, if i were TJ I’d tell them to shove it up their ass via a space x rocket
if you were upset that garrett won last year, you absolutely cannot root for watt now. he leads in none or few of the major box score stats
I feel like we’ve seen this movie before
Where Myles?
Well since Garrett won it based on being double teamed a lot… Maybe this year watt gets it on being chipped a lot.
Makes sense to me (these awards are a joke)
Real talk.. TJ should maybe not be top 5 right now, his impact has been seen, but inconsistent so far this season. Pro bowl level, but not DPOY
I bet a dollar on it before the season started. Do I take the 4.46 cashout that FanDuel is giving me, or do I take my chances at my massive 9 dollar payday?
As he always does. Haters will hate
The DPOY is no longer a production or impact award; it’s a narrative award. The narrative before last season was that Garrett was going to win it, and despite having a nonexistent second half of the season, he still won it. TJ Watt is by no means having the best season of his career, but he absolutely has the best narrative in all his career, so he will most likely win it.
