Factors Giants Are Likely Considering in Potential Quarterback Switch

    >[…]

    >At times, Daboll’s play calling and clock management this season have been a head-scratcher.

    >But there have also been plenty of times when a well-designed, well-timed play was called because Jones, who, for as long as he’s been in New York, didn’t trust what he saw and delayed throwing the ball. This caused receivers to slow down or stop in their routes, limiting the potential for an explosive play.

    >Remember, Daboll is supposed to be a quarterback whisperer. One of the reasons he was hired was his work with Josh Allen in Buffalo and his creativity in play calling.

    >However, the situation in Buffalo was far different from what was waiting for him with the Giants. For starters, Allen came to Daboll straight out of college as a relatively unmolded lump of clay that Daboll could shape and guide toward becoming one of the better signal callers in the league.

Jury might still be a little out on it but can’t help but see some of the play calls this year and wonder. Even for Jones, that missed chance at a play with Wan’Dale Robinson makes you wonder what more could be with the talent now or if there was a change.

    >**The $23 Million Injury Guarantee**

    >In this case, Jones has a $23 million injury guarantee in his deal that, as the Daily News pointed out,[ **extends** ](https://www.threads.net/@plonnfl/post/DCQjNAFskct?xmt=AQGzfcWULeFRBYY8D4Ptytc0D_h8t5qqnOtFmsmpG-4P9A)to an injury on the field and any type of injury he suffers while on the team’s property.

    >Jones sometimes plays recklessly on the field, particularly as a runner, and he still struggles to slide at the end of his runs. He’s also been knocked down [**a league-leading 44 times**](https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/advanced-stats-qb.php), adding another potential risk to his long-term health.

    >To continue putting him out there is taking an unnecessary risk because if that injury guarantee kicks in next year, any potential cap savings the team would gain by releasing Jones would be wiped out, potentially straining their cap space.

    >That said, the Giants don’t necessarily have to go as far as to ban Jones from the property, even though there is always the risk of Jones getting hurt in practice or the weight room.

Don’t even want consider him getting an injury like that off the field in the training room. That might be a little overly cautious around the current situation. Sort of Like Barkley and some of his injures, he wasn’t a guy that was missing weekly games because of soft-tissue injuries as example.. ala Kadarius Toney.

    >**The Successor**

    >This probably doesn’t get talked about enough because everyone automatically assumes that Drew Lock is the next man up if Jones is benched. But that assumption shouldn’t automatically be made for a couple of reasons.

    >First, Lock, in limited playing time back in the summer and this year, didn’t exactly set the world on fire. While it’s hard to know if he’s improved since–team practices are closed to the media, plus Daboll has also said in the past that he wasn’t adjusting the practice reps–Lock might not be the next man up even though he is No. 2 on the depth chart.

The biggest wildcard in the whole thing for me. What would Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito look like back there? And I’m sort of with others on this when we talk about Daboll as the quality coach we believe him to be. Can he get more out of the offense with the other options?

Is that even a good thing.. hahaha.. where we are now in the year for instance.

    >**The Bottom Line**

    >The Giants aren’t mathematically eliminated from the postseason yet, but it’s safe to say that no one who follows this team plans to delay any upcoming vacations after the locker room doors close for the final time this season.

    >Ideally, the Giants may have wanted to continue with Jones for as long as they had a chance for a playoff berth, but they just can’t anymore, not just because they’re on a five-game losing streak.

    Or can he?… hmmm ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|neutral_face)

  2. Ok one point. The concerns about an off field injury while on team property seem a bit overblown because the injury clause is not just any engine or any lost time injury but rather states that he has to be unable to pass a physical at the beginning of the next League year in order for it to kick in. And I would think that an injury of that severity while say working out in the weight room is incredibly unlikely

  3. One factor that I really really hope is considered is is someone who has a reasonable chance of becoming the guy even available. What I’m getting at is I really hope they don’t reach or force a pick on someone that’s going to be another Jones or even worse. If there’s not a guy available that everyone not just on the Giants staff but other teams too think is a legitimate”the guy” then don’t just pick a quarterback because they have to. Sign the best available free agent and try again the following year. In fact given the consensus opinion of the quarterbacks this year it might be a wise idea to sign a veteran free agent so that the guy we draft doesn’t have to be a day one starter.

  4. This is not complicated. Jones is horrible. He appears to be a sincere, hardworking guy who wants to deliver but unfortunately he has regressed. A shame.

The only way Daboll is fired at this point is to keep starting him – if Daboll does so he will lose the team.

    Its over.

  5. Let me guess. Tank commander vs winning two or three meaningless games and fucking ourselves out of a chance for Cam Ward.

  6. “Is Jones Truly Beyond Repair?”

If you still need to ask this, don’t write another NFL piece ever again.

  7. Are there even any top level qb talents this draft to be picking in the top 3? I really hope we don’t end up reaching for 1 and end up missing talent in another position.

  8. I mean what is there to consider? The QB that will get us less wins so that we can draft higher?
