What are your memories from the Fisherman, Spano, Milbury era?

Memories of Ziggy Palffy scoring one on his BACK against the Buffalo Sabres.
Ziggy freakin Palffy! (pretty much the only bright spot during that era)
Watching as Mike Milbury traded away everyone and getting barely anything in return.
Others have said it but Ziggy Palffy
THE KISS!
Where do I start?
I remember Claude Lapointe wearing cloth gloves that would get soaked so halfway through every period an assistant equipment guy would run into the stands behind the bench and toss a dry pair over the glass and Claude would toss his wet ones back for drying.
The bagel boss toss.
Those blimps flying around the Coliseum. Can we bring that back?
The organ.
Kaspar laying some big bits. And being devastated when he was traded to Pittsburgh.
Travis Green and Ziggy Palffy kissing in the corner of the rink.
Lots of giveaways. And at some point they wised up and any giveaway that could be used as a weapon was distributed at the end of the game. I remember standing on the concourse getting a street hockey stick from a garbage bin with a hundred or so in there.
Getting dippin dots almost every game.
Jill Nicolini (maybe this was just after the fisherman era?)
The team being surprisingly good on the PK but dreadful on the PP.
Security being so relaxed and the arena being so empty that you could run over to Sec 118x or whatever it was to high five the players as they walked out the tunnel to the ice.
Kenny Jonsson’s acne.
One Republica – Ready to Go blasting over the speakers at some point every game.
Bryan McCabe trying to start some tradition of the captain standing on a faceoff dot and the rest of the team one by one skating by and tapping his shin guards during warmups.
Bryan Berard being somewhat electric at times though not really playing a lick of defense.
Vladimir Orszagh’s mullet.
Those game day booklet programs/magazines they’d hand out at each game. I miss that.
Fichaud’s fisherman mask. Salo’s mask with the sharks and lighthouse on it. Soderstrom’s oversized cage.
Marty McInnis.
A guaranteed 8-12 game losing streak around January.
The animated Nuts and Jacks vendor guy tossing the bags in the air in the stands. Really all the vendors that walked through the stands.
Waiting for Todd Bertuzzi to play physical.
Regularly seeing players eating at Cafe Baci after games.
And I always thought the jerseys were cool. I was a kid. My first memories of going to games was the first year of the fisherman so I didn’t know anything else. I love our current jerseys but the nostalgia in me would love a fisherman throwback. The reverse retro was cool but I’d like the real thing with the lighthouse shoulder patch.
I wasn’t born yet and I’m glad about that. I do love the fisherman though.
How good the team was
Palffey
Travis green kissing palffey (or was it delgarno)
The kid line, I’m going with the kid line.
The rocket from Woonsocket!!!
Even in the darkest of times, there were some bright spots.
I know I’m in the minority but I actually liked the jerseys. Both the fisherman and the ones with the wave and original logo. And I will die on this hill…if you think the jerseys were the biggest problem we had back then you are an idiot. I can totally understand the people who feel that the fisherman “represented” all of that negativity. But I think the horrible ownerships, the beer league team on the ice, and that jackoff Milbury were a lot bigger problems than the jerseys ever were. It was the 90’s and everybody was trying something new with their looks. It was just the times.
Getting tickets in the upper rows holding up the roof for like seven dollars an hour before a game at the old mausoleum. My friends and I would carpool over there and have a good time even though the team flat out sucked back then. You could get away with parking and a ticket for less than $20 bucks if you timed it right.
Even thought it absolutely sucked at the time, I can look back and smile and laugh now about the whole Spano debacle. The chants were funny at the time, and the documentary on ESPN just goes to show how inept both the league and Islanders ownership trying to unload the team truly was.
I remember that fat fuck asshole “goldie” because you could smell him a mile away. He was a tremendous douche.
It goes without saying but the highlight of that era was Zigmund Palffy. Ownership screwed him but he gave us some great memories in an otherwise bleak lineup. Although Berrard was cool to watch too.
Teasing Marius Czerkawski that his kid looked like Pierce Brosnan. (For those who don’t know, his wife starred in the film Goldeneye)
That douchebag Kirk Muller and his tantrum. Fuck that guy, “Captain Kirk” my ass.
Sadly, Rangers fans comprising 90% of the crowd whenever we played them.
As others have said Kenny Jonssons acne.
Spacehog’s “In the meantime” blasting over the speakers every time we came on to the ice to start a game.
Milbury trading away players that would later become stars and thus torpedoing any chance of our attmept at a rebuild.
I don;t remember the exact game, but my cousin and I went to see the Isles play…I want to say against Philadelphia who at the time was one of the best teams and stacked. Eric Fichaud shut them out and leaving the game EVERYBODY was chanting “FICHAUD” in and around the concourse so loud I thought the windows would blow out. Too bad we rushed him and put so much pressure on the guy.
That STUD lineup of Joe Sacco, Keith Action, Bob Beers, and the best of the best Brett Lindros who scored one off his face! As was said at the time, we got the better of the Lindros brothers…
It was truly our era of being in the dark ages, and I often warn people on this reddit with zero patience that we can go back there very easily if we go scorched earth and trade away everyone for draft picks in the hope that some MIGHT pan out.
I remember buying a velcro wallet with a fisherman logo on it at the Coli and realizing I then had money to put into said wallet.
Also at game the day after Christmas my dad got us corner seats 3 rows off the ice and a ref tossed me a puck when the game ended.
Kasparaitis’ flying hip checks!
I was able to walk up to the box office on game day, and get sets two rows behind the bench or penalty box for about $60 a pop.
Ziggy Motherfucking Palffy scoring a hat trick vs Boston when the isles were actually fighting for a playoff spot. My guy Bryan Berard. Everything besides that gives me PTSD, and just pisses me off from milbury being a fucking idiot, too the team damn near moving (I can still remember the front page of newsday in that regard).
Going to my first game ever with my dad, October 28th 1995 against the Flyers, I still have the ticket stub from that game.
The jersey was not ugly, the team was just bottom feeders.
When it ended.
Bad, bad, bad, bad…those were the worst jerseys. But beyond that…Mike Milbury destroyed the franchise. Single handedly ruined the franchise.
Claude “stone hands” LaPointe, Ziggy & his magic, Kaspar’s house of pain, getting & losing Chara…a lot of agony interspersed w/ some good times
John Pickett creating that abhorrent logo for the sake of a cash grab while he was desperately looking for an owner, and how the Isles realized how big of a mistake it was and petitioned the NHL before the season ended to switch back to old logo officially but were forced to hold onto it for 2 years due to marketing licenses.
Gutless puke holding out thinking he was putting up his IHL numbers for the Isles.
Drafting the “better” Lindros; seeing him get his first goal with Vukota frantically pointing at the puck in the net being so happy for him; realizing that we were witnessing Brett’s last NHL game ever so quickly.
F*ck Dale Hunter.
My mind exploding hearing that Turgeon (with Malakhov) was traded for Muller, Schneider, and Craig Darby.
Kirk Muller not reporting after being told by Milbury to stay home.
Al Arbor leaving the Coliseum in disgust (reportedly) after Isles being eliminated by the Rags in the 94 playoffs.
The slightly less ugly jerseys with the Isles logo and the Fisherman waves.
Being told at one point that it was actually NOT a fisherman but a rather a “navigator”.
Milbury’s first press conference as Isles coach/gm saying “screw the devils, screw the rangers…. i could care less about them”
Seeing that pic above published in Newsday I believe and it serving as a reminder of what I consider to be the dark period all the way to Milstein-Gluckstern truly trying to run the team into the ground before Wang saved the franchise.
