[Linn] Can James Harden pass Steph Curry in three-pointers? Harden: “I’m one of the most confident guys that we have in this league. But no. I probably won’t catch Steph. I don’t think anybody will… He can shoot the shit outta the ball.”

  1. Steph Curry has 9 out of the top 20 most 3s made in a season, including the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th

  2. Just to emphasize how *doesn’t count* he is, **13th** place Kyle Lowry (2193) is closer to **2nd** place Harden (2973), than Harden is to him (3782). He is currently on pace to inaugurate the 4k threes club this regular season as Harden enters the 3k club.

  3. **curry**

    * **965** games played
    * **3782** 3 point shots made
    * **8886** 3 point shots attempted
    * **42.6%** 3 point %

    **harden**

    * **1086** games played
    * **2975** 3 point shots made
    * **8195** 3 point shots attempted
    * **36.3%** 3 point %

    so let’s say for the hell of it that curry retires as of this moment today and his stats remain as is … harden would need 808 3 pointers made to surpass curry

    harden since the start of 2023/24 when he was traded to the clippers has averaged 2.6 3 pointers made per game

    that means harden at that current pace would need to average 2.6 3 pointers made per game over the next 311 games to pass curry

    lets say harden plays on average 70 games per season into the future, he played 72 in 2023/24, it would take harden about 4.5 more seasons worth of games in his career to pass curry so around the middle point of the 2028/29 NBA season

    unless harden turns back the hands of time to his peak and prime rockets days where he was averaging 4.0 3 pointers made although that’s very highly unlikely as he hasn’t averaged even 3.0 3 pointers made per season since 2019/20

    also in the last 4 seasons from 2020/21 thru 2023/24 again he’s averaged again 2.6 3 pointers made a season so that average on 3 pointers made has a pretty long track record right now

    imo it’s very highly unlikely harden would even pass curry in this hypothetical scenario where curry retired today

    never mind curry himself will only add on to his 3 point totals for god knows how much longer and consider that curry in the last 4 seasons from 2020/21 thru 2023/24 still shot 41% on 3s and made 4.9 3 pointers on average per game … or 313 3 pointers made per season

    it’s not unreasonable to project curry could potentially reach 5,000 3 pointer made in his career barring he can remain relatively healthy for the next 4 or so seasons if he decides to even play that long as his current contract runs thru the 2026/27 NBA season

  4. He’s more than 800 behind, and only a year younger. For Harden to catch Curry, he’d have to play long enough after Steph retired to take another ~2,200 3-pointers. So 5 seasons post-Steph at his 23-24 pace. Which would probably be tough to maintain at age 42.

    Even at his peak chucking, 13.2/game (the all-time record for attempts/gm he set in 18-19), it would take more than 2 full seasons at that pace.

    And that’s not counting the distance Curry will be putting between him and Harden between now and when he retires. Which will likely be a few hundred more, at least.

  5. Curry got like 1k more than him and still playing… they’re also roughly the same age. Unless Curry retires suddenly at the end of this season and Harden plays for a bit longer at a high level, that record is not getting beat by him.

    Whoever asked this question really shouldn’t have bothered tbh.

  6. If any player is gonna pass Curry he is not in the league yet.

    It’s not just about shooting precision it’s also about off ball movement and separation. It’s extremely rare to find all of this in one player.

  7. The crazy thing is all these young guys get to come into a league that encourages them to shoot ten 3s, and grew up developing knowing that this is the way to play

    Steph was shooting 44%3pt as a rookie, but never got to take even 5 attempts per game until his 4th season.

    He had to create the 3PT revolution himself, everyone else gets to just benefit from it

  8. Will harden pass Curry? Nope. Unless Curry retires this season, Harden wont reach Curry.

    Will anyone pass Curry? Definitely. In terms of unbreakable records, made 3 pointers is a realistic record with how many threes teams are now taking and how players will develop their skills growing up. I’d say his record stands for maybe 30 years before someone breaks it.

  9. Only person in the league who has a shot to pass Steph Curry is Jared McCain. Honestly? I think McCain will do it.

  10. That’s not even to mention that Curry is still pulling farther ahead of Harden every year. It’s really an absurd question to even contemplate.

  11. Even if Steph never made another 3 for the rest of his career, Harden still realistically would not catch Steph’s record.

    Then once you consider that Harden has already declined much more than Steph, it makes catching Steph 10x as impossible.

  12. I thought a few years ago harden had a small shot at it but curry is beating father time and harden regressed really early

  13. Steph shot creation is insane and he gets his props…but I would kill to see Ray Allen join the league in the 2020s and see what damage he can do, nobody could ever convince me that Harden/Lillard/Klay are better pure shooters than Ray.

  14. Steph will definitely be passed up nobody will do it in anywhere close to his efficiency but just based on pure volume it’ll happen

  15. By the time it’s all said and done, if Steph stays relatively healthy and plays until he’s 39 or 40, he’ll have close to 5000. I don’t see Harden sinking another 2000+ before his career ends

  16. Perfect response. As a Sixers fan, I miss James the character, just maybe not the failed playoff foul bating.
