DOES YZERMAN NEED TO MAKE A CHANGE? – Winged Wheel Podcast – Nov. 17th, 2024

Do the Detroit Red Wings need to make a change?

Tune in as we start by discussing Detroit’s brutal loss to Treovr Zegras and the Anaheim Ducks as they kicked their road trip off in the worst way, including Marco Kasper’s 1st career NHL goal, Jonatan Berggren striking again, DeBrincat finding Lucas Raymond to break his slump, Alex Lyon’s rough return, Simon Edvinsson leaving with an injury, and Derek Lalonde’s squad’s ugly loss (4:15). After that, a predictable loss to Cam Talbot’s former team in the Los Angeles Kings, including another lopsided affair where only Dylan Larkin’s goal could at all spoil the show as Moritz Seider had to contend without his defensive partner (13:40). After that, what Simon Edvinsson being out would mean for Steve Yzerman’s Hockeytown team and what the game against San Jose means for them (Hagens? Martone? Misa?) (20:25).

Next, we have the big discussion: does Steve Yzerman need to consider firing Derek Lalonde? How much of the defensive woes are on Lalonde vs. Yzerman bringing in the likes of Gustafsson, Holl, Petry, and others? Who would replace him – Quenneville? McLellan? Montgomery? Sullivan? Can this be turned around? All of that and lots more as the Detroit Red Wings and their fans look for answers (27:05).

After that, more Red Wings news including Jack Campbell returning and being waived to the Grand Rapids Griffins, Larkin’s goal pace, the stellar play of Nate Danielson, Dmitri Buchelnikov, Emmitt Finnie, & more (48:50) before we get into NHL news including the rising salary cap (& what it means for Detroit’s core), Pittsburgh’s whole team being sick, & more (55:40).

All of that & plenty more before we take your questions & comments in our Overtime segment (1:03:15) – enjoy!

  1. Pistons are gunna make the playoffs before the wings. Yzerman and lalonde can both go. And actually Chris needs to sell the team cuz he is the biggest problem

  2. They don't play like a team it's like watching a pick-up game
It's like they don't know what the other players are going to do and it doesn't look like anyone has any confidence each team has it's identity and that comes from coaching but all I see is players looking lost on the ice and so I believe there has to be a coaching change

  3. Weird.

Team’s build bad. I’ve been saying the prospects pool was wildly overrated, by writers and fans alike. “When the team’s competitive” is a troublingly malformed defense of the Yzerplan. Who will be the first line center for the team “when the team is competitive”? Larkin’s on the wrong side of manifold injuries and is presently in the dead middle of his career and prime, if he carries on the rest of it uninjured. This season is a referendum because the moves made the last two years attempted to make a playoff appearance.

  4. drafting has been fine under Draper/Stevie, but the pro scouting department seems to be unbelievably bad. on their own, one or two of the bad signings/trades could be papered over but when its damn near every single decision? woooofffffff

  5. If you don’t cut Lalonde loose now, you’re burning the season. If you do, the season may still be a disaster, but at least you tried. Shoulda hired Berbube when they had the chance.

  6. To many old over paid bad signings !! Coach is way over rated, Yzerman needs to start a rebuild on the rebuild..Very very SAD!! The best thing that could happen to the Wings would be to have a COUPLE of really BAD BAD reasons,,get some high draft picks,, The word on the street is 2026 has a super star # 1,, and trade as many vets as possible and get as many draft picks for the next couple of years…A NEW REBUILD starts yesterday, period….

  7. The Wings are and have been a very very soft team to play against,,So yes you are right Brad , this team has no F in balls !! No D as I have been saying since last year,, and the forwards minus a couple of players are way over rated,, Copp, Compher,, Tarrasenko,, Gustafson, Holl,, Peitry, just to mention a few,,,that's a lot of $$$ doing O !! I think Stevie needs to be held accountable for some of the wow's that are now clear !!!! Like I said,,start a new rebuild and stop just hanging in there,, a few HIGH draft picks would go further in the future than just picking 15,, and trade as many old farts as possible.for what ever picks you can get,,Can't make chicken soup out of chicken sh!t !!

  8. Yes, coach had his chance. Was pushing this better defensive play this season and it has not worked.

Time for another set of eyes and ideas to get this team back on track

  9. The main issue is that if this team is going to have so many inefficiencies why not just accept it and suck? Our future would be much brighter if we sucked the last few years instead of being a middle of the pack team. I mean we potentially missed out on Bedard, Carlsson, Fantilli, Will Smith, Michkov, Cooley, Slafkovsky, Wright etc

Especially the bedard year missed out on potentially some massive game changers that actually could make this team legit. Now we are banking on one of Kasper or Danielson to somehow hit Larkin level, all while Larkin is clearly too old for this core and his contract will be bad when this team is supposed to be competitive.

Entire handling of this team has been atrocious

  10. The interesting thing with the Lalonde/Yzerman discussion is what was your assessment before the season? I think many believed, independent of contract amounts, that the Tarasenko signing was a good one, and the Gustafsson signing was a step down from Ghost, but maybe lesser offense, better defense situation – maybe two steps back on offense but a step forward on defense. I don't think anyone predicted how pedestrian Tarasenko would be and poor Gustafsson would be. The same holds true for other signed players. So the question is, are the players bad or is the coaching staff just not using them well? I tend to give coaching staffs a long runway but to me this is more coaching than player acquisition. Also, several players have had bad first years with the team, so is that just normal player transitioning to a new team or is it coaches slowly learning how to play their guys over the year?

I felt before the season the Wings had a fair chance to make the playoffs, similar to last year's results or a bit lower. This current team isn't that. If the sentiment Kane expressed a week or two ago is any indication of the rest of the team, Lalande has or is close to losing the ear of his team and certainly there's disagreements on how to move forward in-house.

Lastly, I don't think Lalonde is "special" in any specific area so I'm not particularly uncomfortable in losing that, its just a feeling though.

  11. I agree with Brad, no one steps up to fill the bigger shoes, they fall apart when there’s an injury. STEP UP everyone in the team is in the NHL and should be capable of at least being serviceable to a reasonable extent. This team is not fundamentally that different from last year. The D core wasn’t great last season and it’s not great this season.

  12. Happy with drafting Trey Augustine in the second round a couple years ago. Gibson was able to be flipped for decent. Brady Cleveland was a real head scratcher. There were quality center prospects still on the board and we chose defense in an offense heavy draft there.

  13. Folks don't want to hear this but the Wings need some freakin Luck!!! Somebody has to be what nobody thought they would be and be a Star for this team. Right now we don't have many Brimstone and fire guys who demand excellence and can back it up. Larkin is not that kind of player and Kane is past his prime. People want Lalonde to be the firestarter but not sure that is his personality. Patience and some Luck IMO are what we need most lol. What if our 2nd round Russian pick can come and be another Ovechkin. Wouldn't that be nice lol

  14. We can suck forever and I'll stick around as a fan. If Quenneville gets hired, I'll stop watching Wings hockey. Dude doesn't deserve a place in hockey ever again, let alone a storied franchise like Detroit.

  15. I'd be surprised if we make a coaching change at this point of the season. This roster is a downgrade from last year, that is more on management than Newsy. Now, I WOULD like to see a trade for an actual top 4 D man, and at this point I am ready to give up some of that sweet sweet young talent to do so. However that being said, we don't have many players under good value contracts currently, and the next 2 season are unfortunately going to be more of the same…

  16. I'm so tired of the "they don't have any talent" argument. No that's incorrect, their "talent" is snakebitten right now and not producing enough. You have Raymond, Larkin, ADB, Kane, Edvinsson, Seider, Lyon, Talbot, Tarasenko, Compher etc… These guys aren't scoring enough so you are seeing games slip because they are too conservative which is a coaches system that clearly doesn't work in a league where scoring is on the rise. Stop saying they don't have talent its false. If they didn't have talent they wouldn't have missed the playoffs last season by a game…
