What is going on?! This is not the coaching change I was expecting this early in the season… thoughts?

  1. People were calling for the lightning coach to be fired after their best regular season then getting swept.

    Then he won 2 cups.

Hockey is a weird af sport to coach.

Maybe the bruins are worse off now, time will tell.

  2. Someone made a comment in the NHL sub to bet on whoever hires JM, to win the cup.

And I mean, the Pens have a history of winning the cup after a coach change 🤷

  3. Monty would be an amazing hire in Pitt

Really believe Dubas has his tied when it comes to Sullivan, FSG think he’s Jesus or something

  4. He took a mid roster to the best regular season ever , if that never happened he’d still have a job, crazy league

  5. Guys you all don’t understand the situation. Pens aren’t in a position to win. We have a roster full of bad players. We are in rebuild mode. Even if JM works magic the team won’t make playoffs.

Sullivan is steering the ship towards high draft picks. Priority now is to let young players develop.

  6. JM may not be from Boston but he has for the most part lived there for the last few years.

That should be good enough for FSG right?… Right?! FFS I hate this ownership group.

  7. There’s a LOT of evidence on the table that the Penguins are not *trying* to be playoff contenders anymore. Every trade they’ve made since Jake has been for futures, not to improve the current team for a Cup run. We just traded Eller for nothing but future assets a month into the season. Pettersson and others that have value will be gone in the coming months, too. That’s our new reality, and it’s unfamiliar to Pens fans of the last two decades.

A contending team would have signed Jake’s extension, avoided a bad contract like Hayes, kept a strong 3C like Eller, and yes – probably have fired their underperforming coach in an attempt to change the results. But a rebuilding team trades Jake for future assets, takes on bad contracts for future assets, and trades Eller for…you guessed it…future assets. That same rebuilding team publicly committed to Sullivan (and Dubas) as the guy(s) to take them through that rebuild.

Now, to be fair, FSG and/or Dubas should come out and say this, like the NY Rangers did a few years back. Tell the fans where we are and what the expectations are, so there’s less disappointment around these results and more reason to be optimistic about the future. Pretending to be a contender for ticket sales or the morale of players/fans is a recipe for disaster when the results inevitably don’t match the false expectations they’re helping to create.

  8. This seems to me to be more of a sign of two different gm philosophies than anything else.

One gm fired a coach that had a historic regular season one year and won coach of the year, but who’s team has MASSIVELY underperformed in the playoffs despite being stocked with talent. The Bruins haven’t been great this year, but this feels like Sweeney is taking the heat off himself and the players by sacrificing a good coach.

The other gm seems to be staying the course with a coach he believes in (at least so far) who HAS won multiple cups but hasn’t done much good with the team lately. He hasn’t exactly maximized the talent he has, but (despite what a lot of people here want to believe) the Pens aren’t nearly as loaded with talent as Boston, and the coach has been saddled with poor acquisitions by both the current and former gm. They are also aging fast and some of the players who are aging don’t seem emotionally capable of recognizing their limitations.

So to summarize, there’s a lot more to these two situations than “We haven’t fired our coach yet and another team has, therefore our ownership doesn’t care.”

  9. Dubas will literally have to come out and say we’re tanking for some of you to understand what’s actually going on with this team. ITS OBVIOUS.

  10. FSG just sucks as an equity firm ownership group. Thats the start and the end of it. The Penguins do not matter to them.

  11. I feel like Montgomery got fired because the front office bungled the goalie situation.

Montgomery also had that amazing 2022-2023 season with half the first line playing for peanuts before they retired or headed home.
