Shad Con: The NFL’s Worst Owner Is Destroying The Jaguars
42 comments
This reads like a fan rant. Yawn.
I think calling him The Worst Owner is a bit much considering Bidwell, Haslam, and Tepper exist. Woody Johnson is also making his case this year.
I get that he is slow in making hard decisions and gives too much of a long leash but geez lets keep it realistic here.
did we forget the part that Shad is dedicated to keeping the franchise in Jax? let’s not let this years misery overshadow the bigger picture
I disagree that he’s the league’s worst owner. His results aren’t there in terms of wins and losses but imo bad owners don’t spend money or refuse to upgrade the facilities for players.
Khan has upgraded the stadium, locker room, practice field, is paying half of the new stadium, spends a lot of money in free agency and ditches coaches and GMs in order to try to find someone better.
He could’ve easily ditched Jacksonville for greener pastures but he’s doing everything possible to keep the team in Jacksonville and be a competitive team.
His moves don’t work most of the time but to call him a bad owner isn’t fair.
BCC is always a nightmare read
As frustrated as I am with Khan, he is not nearly the worst owner in the league. For starters, I like him much better than David Tepper or Woody Johnson. His problem is that he doesn’t know football and doesn’t have good football people around him. The best thing he could do is get guys like Fred and Tony in a room and say, I’ve tried outside consultants. I’ve tried patience. I’ve tried established guys. I’ve tried new guys. Tell me… what would you do if you were me?
He’s not a bad owner but he is awful at hiring people to make football decisions. At least he wants to keep the jags in Jacksonville it could be worse. I think if he can hire a gm that actually knows what they’re doing that can fix a lot of problems
Absolutely delusional take. Jaguars are a premier franchise from a business perspective, new stadium deal agreed and financed, amazing practice facilities built and financed, commitment to the city when so many other owners would have left town long ago.
Ask Rams fans what they think of Kroenke, oh wait, the fans in St Louis or the ones in LA? Would anyone take a Jaguars Super Bowl win with the cost of it being the Toronto Jaguars?
Yes, results on the field haven’t been there for Khan’s time as owner, but the Jaguars are a serious franchise and it should be clear that Khan’s desire is to win.
It’s the same with the T Law haters, broaden your horizons and watch ball and you’ll realise we have a stud owner and a rockstar QB.
Anyone who calls shad a bad owner hasn’t seen a bad owner. He doesn’t meddle, he pays the money, he wants the team to stay in Jax. Yes, he’s very prone to not changing things up, but as bad as our situation rn is, it could be worse
I like Dilla usually but this is so stupid and reactionary. Shad spends money and doesn’t meddle. That’s really all you need in an owner, he just picked the wrong guys. Meyer was all on him of course but he at least corrected it quickly. Bradley and Pederson were praised hires and arguably the right hires without hindsight. He is too lenient yes but also lets the football guys do whatever they want which is a good thing. And he always spends money in free agency and gives players bonuses to more easily work the cap. Compare this to for example Mark Davis and the Raiders or the McCaskey’s in Chicago or Tepper’s meddling ass in Carolina, those franchises are basically hopeless. That is just scratching the surface, Khan is basically what you want in an owner, just hasn’t gotten it right yet. The Jaguars at least have the hope of hiring the right guys and it’s all set up to run from an owner perspective. I fail to see what Khan could’ve done differently other than hiring different people in hindsight. Blaming him is just emotionally lashing out. I want Pederson gone but in reality firing him now instead of at the end of the season really makes no difference.
On top of all of this he kept the team in Jacksonville and has done so much for the city including a new state of the art practice facility and stadium coming soon. I swear any other owner would’ve moved the team within 5 years of them acquiring it.
If your first reaction is to defend the lazy billionaire right now, you are way too complacent with this mediocre franchise. Demand better.
Send in the Khlowns
Lets look at his hires since he took over the team. Discounting the 2012 season which was just a holdover season since he ended up getting ownership a bit late so we all understood why everyone was kept on.
2013: Gus Bradley and Dave Caldwell. Gus was looked at as one of the up-and-coming future head coaches, Caldwell was looked at as a top GM prospect. People did think maybe Shad should’ve hired a bigger name like Andy Reid or Chip Kelly
2017: Doug Marrone and Tom Coughlin. The players responded to Doug well as interim head coach and wasn’t the worst pick at the time (Sean McDermott in Buffalo was considered the worst hire at the time). Coughlin was thought as to be a good football mind to oversee operations and keep Caldwell’s worst instincts from flaring up. There were concerns that the league had passed Coughlin by and this could blow up spectacularly. Kyle Shanahan was interviewed and Doug interviewed for the SF job. There’s a world where Kyle comes in 2017 and Doug goes to the Niners.
2020: Urban Meyer and Trent Baalke. Urban was a crapshoot hire, always talking of going to the NFL and now finally getting his shot. Trent had credit for building the Niners team that had a Super Bowl run in 2012 but had issues with coaching staff.
2021: Doug Pederson. Thought of as a good hire as a winning coach who had issues with the GM and Owner over how he coached and ran his team. Believed that he would not have those issues in Jacksonville.
There is a lot of bad luck and failure to understand the past. Interestingly, first time head coaches in Jacksonville end up being spectacularly bad with no winning seasons but the retreads have at least gotten a playoff win. It is likely we will see a retread HC because of this fact.
Hes clearly the worst owner in terms of on field success.
But, Id say he’s more like 28th best than absolute worst.
Davis, Tepper, Haslam are in a league of their own right now. Probably Woody, too.
Khan is right there with Bidwill, Spanos, and Irsay in the second tier from the bottom.
The NFL is a results oriented business. Shad Khan has the worst winning percentage of any owner in the NFL, at 0.301 (62-144). The discussion about him starts and ends there.
Could he be worse? Off the field, yes. On the field, not really. He is the one common denominator over the last 12 years, where the Jaguars have lost more than anyone else in a league designed for parity. Yes, I’m glad he upgraded the practice facilities and yes, I’m glad the Jaguars have secured a new stadium. However, the bottom line remains that the Jaguars have been consistently dysfunctional under his ownership and we’re about to run TLaw out of town if we mess up this next hire. Given his track record of hiring coaches I’m not optimistic he gets it right!
Shad Khan is FAAAAAAAR from the worst owner in the league. He spends money on the team (unlike the chiefs owner), doesn’t try to run football operations (Jerry Jones) or interfere in the teams dealings (panthers owner), and more importantly doesn’t cause PR problems (panthers and former commanders owner)
Maybe not the *worst* owner, but he’s certainly not a good one. I mean, being such a hands off owner can be good as long as he hires the right people to run it…. but he doesn’t. He is way too hands off, to the point where I honestly don’t think he really knows what’s going on.
Dilla is in his feels and perhaps a bit dramatic, but he makes a lot of good points. No one takes jacksonville seriously, and they shouldn’t. Khan doesn’t address the fans often and he should. The fans who continue to stick with the team after years of misery deserve better.
I’m done pretending that khan is a good owner simply because he spends a lot of money. He’s not a good owner and he seems to surround himself with people that are either “Yes men” or don’t care.
He’s not a bad owner. He’s kept the team in Jacksonville, is willing to spend whatever is necessary, brought the facilities and is bringing the stadium up to high standards. What he’s also not is a smart football guy. And that’s OK, he doesn’t need to be. He just needs to find somebody who is, and let them make the important football decisions.
Shad is not the worst owner. He seems like a decent human. Willing to spend money.
Shad just picks the wrong football people.
Shad is more like William Clay Ford who kept hiring the wrong people for the Lions.
Hopefully we don’t have to wait for Shad to die and his heirs to take over.
Not the worst owner. But very bad at the on field product.
This is a terrible take. Yes, 100% he has failed repeatedly to put a good football leadership structure in place. But you could do waaaaay worse for an owner.
It’s honestly insane to call him the league’s worst owner. There’s at least five owners who are worse for a variety of reasons.
Kudos to anyone who hasn’t checked out at this point. I don’t hate Kahn too much myself but I’m also kind of ok with the Jags being regularly bad with random great playoff runs.
There is no reality where khan is worse than Jimmy Haslam. That man should be behind bars for criminal negligence. Jimmy managed to be the worst owner in Cleveland sports history. Which is insane considering art model was there!
Yeah Kronke would like to put his name in the ring. Fucked over St. Louis royally to move to a city with more opposing fans than home fans.
Benglas easily have the worst owner in the league.
I feel like the only thing he’s done wrong is hire the wrong people. He’s literally bent over backwards with his money to give the team everything they physically need to be successful. The management is just so bad that those things don’t really do anything.
It’s all about goals. The Jaguars don’t win a lot of games, but they make a fortune for Mr. Khan. Some people would argue that makes him a huge success as an owner.
I think he is a great businessman and he will spend money on the team.
I think he is terrible as far as football decision making and not being willing to make tough decisions
I also thing he is not good as far as connecting to the community. I understand not being Jerry Jones as far as access but he rarely gives an interview and seems to treat the organization as an afterthought.
Where does that rank him as far as owners? I don’t think he is the worst but I wouldn’t put him in the upper or second tier of owners.
Shad Kahn is 62/144 as owner of the Jaguars. That’s the worst win percentage of any team in any sport during that time period. No team in the MLB, NHL, NBA, or NFL has lost more than the Jaguars. In terms of winning percentage he is the worst owner in professional sport.
Tepper, owner of the Panthers is the worst owner, currently in my eyes. Both for on feild product, general front office BS, and over all temperament.
I’m not trying to cut Shad any slack, but credit where credit is due. Also Haslam has to be in the conversation for worst current owner, of the Browns.
Plus honourable mention to Dan Snyder. The all time worst NFL owner, all time and forever.
I get the feeling the author is one of those people who thinks browbeating someone improves their performance.
Big cat country sucks
He may not be the worst but…. He has not done anything smart with the people he hires to improve our culture of losing. That’s who we are to the rest of the league. New England was like this in the early mid nineties. Every time we have a good season that was unexpected he comes in the next year claiming Super Bowl or bust. He knows nothing about developing a winning culture which is why our team always has high players turnover.
Baalke needs to go #1 If he so toxic that people outside the organization don’t want to come here he shouldn’t be here.
We need the Lions OC as HC #2 Trevor and the offense needs a coach that is relatable and can inspire them. It’s true Trevor should be ripping it right now. Instead he looks lost and I blame the coaching
Khan is the owner and overall leader of the jags. He needs to own his mistakes and learn from his failures
Any owner who has ripped a team away from its city is automatically worse than him.
He’s not a good owner but I don’t think he’s the worse. I live in Charlotte and the way Tepper runs the panthers is much more detrimental imo. But I’m all for calling out the Jaguars, I’m tired of shooting for mediocrity and not even achieving that goal.
Woody Johnson owns the Jags too??
Has this dude never heard of Cleveland?
He’s not the worst…yet. But he’s catching up.
Im gonna defend Shad here. He is investing in the city and trying to create a beautiful riverfront area. Can anyone else name another mega billionaire willing to transform the riverfront area of Jax? (Liberal bs I hate billionaires yadda yadda bleh).
I think he’s actually interested in making Jax a real city…
I had hope for him but now I feel like he is destroying this team. 🤦♂️
As a bears fan i disagree on you guys having the worst owner.
