I’ll start by saying I’m not actually an A’s fan and that I’m not even American.
I visited San Francisco back in 2017 and one of the things I wanted to do was see a sports game of any kind. Basketball and football were my first picks, but neither were on. There was baseball though, which I was more than happy to see too; however, it was to watch the A’s rather than the Giants.
That didn’t matter to me though, I just wanted to experience a proper MLB game.
And I’ll tell you what, it was bloody brilliant. It a as scorching hot (my southern British skin was NOT prepared enough for that), but it was a great game to experience.
If I remember right, 2017 wasn’t an exceptionally bad year, yet still the Coliseum was incredibly empty. I managed to get seats right behind home plate for I think only $20 which I thought was unreal!
They played the Texas Rangers, and just to my luck, they won! My mum, who I made the trip with, picked Matt Chapman as her favourite player, and as if by fate with us in the crowd, he made a great double play to essentially win the game!
A’s are up 4-3 in the top of the 8th, bases loaded for the Rangers, only 1 out. Batter hits it straight at Chapman at third base who catches it for one out, then beats the runner at third who can’t get back in time to get them all out!
I had to search up the exact specifics but I remember that play so vividly. For the few thousand fans that were there, it was amazing!
Anyway, long story short, I have these 2 coupons that I saved from the game. I was never able to redeem them, but they act as a nice reminder for me of my first MLB game day experience. Feels more poignant now that the A’s are leaving the Coliseum. I may not support them, but they’ll always have a special place in my heart
