[Cadeaux] Alex Ovechkin will miss at least a month with a broken fibula, per the Caps

  1. Gut reaction was “wow this is way worse than I thought”, but I’m happy this isn’t news about a torn ligament or even a bad sprain TBH

  2. Better than a ligament. Let him rest up over the holidays, and get him back the start of the year… that’s not that bad imo.

  3. A fractured fibia, according to ESPN. I don’t know if there’s a medical distinction between a fracture and a break.

Either way, 4-6 week is probably about what most of us expected. He’ll be back in early January and hungrier than ever. I’m so grateful they disclosed this information. Usually the NHL doesn’t show its hand when it comes to injuries, but “week to week with a lower body injury” sounds *a lot* more ominous than “4-6 weeks with a fracture.”

Sucks, but I feel a lot better now. 8’s gonna be HUNGRY come the new year.

  4. Honestly this is one of the best-case scenarios given how it looked. Ligament would be much dicier and would heal much slower than a bone. And the risk of re-injury would be huge.

  5. Suspend the season until he’s back, it’s only fair 🤷🏻‍♂️ (I’m ………90? % joking?)

  6. Given the possibilities of injuries he could have had, this isn’t that bad. Bone breaks are WAY easier to come back from than soft tissue injuries. Get well soon, Ovi!

  7. I’m a bit bummed because I’m seeing the Caps in Boston in December but happy that the news isn’t worse.

  8. Sucks but that’s a less complex fix than waiting for a 39 year old ligament to come around. Less likely to be an issue in the near future as well (unlike a soft tissue area which can easily be reaggrevated, esp at 39 years old)

  9. If he’s back in 4-6 weeks, he’ll miss about 20 total games give or take. That’s probably 12-15 goals max that he’ll miss out on. The chase will live on once he returns.

  10. honestly i’m just glad it wasn’t his knee… it sucks he’s missing time but i feel like he will come back with a vengeance.

  11. I’m actually optimistic about this. It’s not ligament/knee damage, and it something that has a pretty straightforward recovery period, plus a little bit of conditioning after healed up (which would be the case for the other scenarios anyways).

  12. This goes to show you why these gaudy, huge, records are so hard to break. You need to both be incredibly talented, but also equally lucky. Hockey is a violent game. It is astonishing that Ovi has missed so few games over a nearly 20 year career.

Looking forward to seeing him back on the ice soon!
