[Cubs] Alfonsin Rosario to Cleveland (#21 Cubs Prospect)

  1. 20 yr old with sky high, stratospheric ceiling. 4 tools project above average, 2 of which I’d say elite.

But the hit tool is not there, at all. and the pitching he sees is only going to get better. I think Jed is banking on the prediction that he stalls out in minors, unable to adapt to higher level breaking stuff. Otherwise you’d never trade a guy like this for a middle reliever.

Might be a good bet. Might burn us big time.

  2. Guy had a good offensive performance in low A, 127 wRC+

However, he did have a 32% K rate, so it’s gonna be tough to keep up that offense at higher levels without cutting down the K’s in a big way.

  3. Cleveland: “what about Rosario?”

    Jed: “I like Rosario”

Cleveland: “No you don’t nobody does.”

    The trade talks probably.

  4. He seems/seemed like a foundational piece of not the next wave of prospects but the following one. He was not traded at the peak of his prospect trajectory trade value. Showed a decent power bat in a very pitcher’s friendly park. I’m not sure when the pipeline was last updated but 21 seems low. Several guys worse that are ranked above.

But hey, if Jed doesn’t make the playoffs he’s gone so why should he care about the wave after the current AAA/AA wave?

We got a good RP. Not a closer or setup guy, or a guy who has high velocity/K rates. FIP was 3.64 so that’s quite the delta from the 1.93 era.

The real savings is only having to pay him 1M while a comparable FA would cost significantly more. So while I could easily argue against this deal in a vacuum, that’s now how this works, and the full picture of it depends what we use the monetary savings on.

*Alfonsin Rosario was the #11 Cubs prospect in my book. A player with flaws and we’ll see how the athleticism ages, but legit power is legit power.*

*Gotta give something to get something though, and Morgan is a nice fit.*

*Like I said, the price was gonna sting. Morgan has very real value, so the Cubs give up a very high-upside (some risk) prospect to get him.*

*Oooouch. Like I said, the return was gonna sting: it’s outfield prospect Alfonsin Rosario, who was showing some serious breakout ability this year, and would’ve slotted into the top-15 in the system. The 20-year-old center fielder hit .230/.344/.423/127 wRC+ at Low-A in his first full pro season, and the physical tools are tremendous. Huge power potential. Yes, there’s still a lot of swing-and-miss to work out, and maybe it sidetracks him significantly on the ascent up the ladder. But you’d bet on the athleticism to help him adjust. And we know how valuable a plus bat with power in center field can be. If he develops as well as he could, this is going to look like a tremendous deal for the Guardians.*

  6. I’m torn on this one. I don’t love trading upside for a player without much ceiling. Same time, Rosario has a 30-grade hit tool and isn’t overly young for Low-A. I’d also rather do this trade than sell the farm for Mason Miller or someone where you’re paying the price for the best reliever in baseball for several years and what you’ll end up getting is almost certainly not that for the majority of the years you’ll have him
