49ers Update: Kyle Shanahan’s weirdest mistake ever

  1. 1:20 "As you can see, I paused it here, the defense is not taking it seriously…"

Huh? This guy has paused the tape after McCaffrey caught the ball, and LB Boye Mafe had taken 3 steps to tackle him. That's obviously NOT where LB Boye Mafe was positioned in coverage.

Pause at 1:17 instead (right before the throw). LB Boye Mafe is on the hashmarks at the bottom of the screen, playing zone (the coverage looks like 4 deep/2 under). He doesn't ignore Jaylon Moore (who's still 5 yards behind the LOS, at that). Even worse, If you look at 0:58 you'll see LB Boye Mafe has his hips pointed towards Jaylon Moore. Boye Mafe simply stayed in his zone and didn't leave Jaylon Moore completely uncovered.

This guy is an idiot. I'm not even a 49ers fan, or a Shanahan fan. This video annoyingly started playing right after the last video I watched on football.

  2. Kyle as our coach has brought us to 4 NFCCG's and 2 Superbowl's in last 5 years. Finally, having a rough year I see how many are ready to throw him to the curb. No coach is perfect and there's no perfect replacement. Shannahan turned this 9er organization around pretty quickly and I will give him the benefit of the doubt. He deserves that. Hopefully 9ers can go on a run here. If not, a bad year. It happens. Was McVay, Lafleur, Siriani, Tomlin and McDermott fired? And they haven't nearly excelled as much as Shannahan in last 5 years barring McVay's Superbowl. 9ers have been to 3 straight NFC title games!!! Thats not easy to do. And a muffed punt or missed ex point away from a Superbowl title himself. All geniuses are defiant and stubborn. It's how they got to be where they are. Yes, there's some mistakes but no coach is perfect. I just think "us 9er fans" have gotten a bit spoiled. Yes, not having that SB win stings but I still believe. And so should everyone else.

  3. FINALLY being critical of Shanahan Everyone thinks he’s such a genius but he shrinks under pressure and doesn’t trust all of his personnel He had Mason and Gorendo and didn’t use them Why not put CMC out there and put Mason and Gorendo on the field at the same time giving the Defense something to try and defend Also someone needs to tell Shanahan it’s OK to leave an extra player / lineman to stay home and block in pass protection

  4. I think Kyle should utilize that lineman as a tight end. If he is open and unguarded, Purdy should go there. I hope that dude Moore can catch the ball and go ten yards. If they threw the ball to Moore, then it might have pulled a defensive player or players. Like you said it can be a waste if Kyle isn't actually going to use him which seems to be the case. So yeah, it is a waste like you said.

  5. There's actually a couple of really weird things with this play and personnel package.

First off, why the heck would you not simply use Juice in that TE2 role for this play? Moore's role on this play isn't rocket science, he chips on the DE and then goes out into the flat – Juice is more than capable of doing that, and he's at least some kind of receiving threat. He could certainly have played those 12 extra snaps considering he only plays 30-40% of offensive snaps normally (not sure if he was out there with Moore on some of those), and it's not like putting Juice out there screams "run" any more than using a 6th O-lineman.

Second, why bother having Moore or anyone else chip that DE anyway? That's the left side – Trent doesn't need any help. If that TE (whoever it is) just releases immediately into the flat instead of chipping first, that route becomes a quicker answer for Purdy.

To me, this "Jaylon Moore as TE2" thing speaks to a wider issue of Shanahan's game plans not being resilient to missing even one key player due to injury. We've seen this before when Deebo was out during the losing streak last season, and with CMC missing the first half of this season. A good game plan needs to be able to work with only 3 or 4 elite offensive weapons rather than all 5, but Kyle seems to have an issue with focusing on plays that require star-level talent to perform key roles.

Nice use of the astronomy reference, btw.🤣

  6. This guy’s tripping. That route worked if Brenden held his block. Easy 20 yard gain to an uncovered guy. Shit worked like a fake point that got the team surprised with less risk

  7. 1:49 Even if Moore falls down after the catch, he still gets more yards on the play and now the D has to account for him. The only mistake is Brendel not blocking and Purdy not getting him the ball. The way I see it, Kyle schemed someone open and the rest of the team failed to execute.

  8. In many ways, Kyle's head just doesn't seem to be fully cut in this season. It's as if he's constantly distracted and not thinking straight.

Has anyone stopped to ask him if he's actually okay? The man DID just go through a divorce, after all.
