Jeter on Winning – This is the Yankees mentality I remember

  1. Players are soft and have different motivations. Same with the NBA, the mamba mentality and Jordans drive isn’t there. They also get paid much more than before and rewarded for mediocre play. As long as their buying their Gucci and platinum Rolexes they are happy.

  2. I love Jeter, he is probably my favorite player all time as I grew up as him as the captain, but this type of mentality is toxic. Yes the goal is to win, but there are people in this sub that can’t seem to enjoy the regular season because all that matters is that last win of the year.

We’ve been blessed and spoiled to be able to enjoy winning baseball almost every year where we are at the top of the AL league most of the time. People need to learn to separate the regular season from the playoffs. Not winning a ring has sucked, but to act like the last 15 years have sucked because of that is a terrible mentality.

  3. This is nearly every athlete’s sentiment about losing. It’s just that nobody bothers to ask the losers, so it seems like ‘winners’ are special. The ‘Teddy Roosevelt Man in the Ring’ analogy honors those who compete even when they get knocked down.

  4. as a fan, i’ll go ahead and rank the loses imo.

1: 2004 – absolute worst. was in college and 2 of my roomates were from boston. i was gloating hard after being up 3-0. oof.

    2: all the others

  5. Worth noting that Jeter was also spoiled from being on such great teams. He won 4 titles in his first 5 years. That simply doesn’t happen. It set crazy expectations for him throughout his career. Both internally and externally.

Some guys are in the big leagues for 10+ years before they ever even reach the playoffs. For those players, just making the CS is their career highlight. They’re not going to say “yeah it sucked, no different than getting eliminated in August because we didn’t win in the end.”

Jeter himself has admitted a big regret of his was never enjoying anything in the moment. He didn’t appreciate winning a pennant or even a World Series because he was immediately onto the next thing. It’s not unhealthy to take a moment after losing a World Series to appreciate it was still a good run before getting back to work.

  6. I remember that. I also remember from the mid 80’s until then, and every year afterwards.

  7. I get both of their points. Being one of the final two is an accomplishment but not winning it is still a failure.

Derek is just a different level. Win or nothing. That drive led him to be one of the best players of all time and the favorite player of a generation of baseball fans.
