Probably needed to happen. Ashcraft was likely headed to the bullpen. And with Singer on board, I think there’s a chance the Reds could still have Lowder in the rotation, and Abbott maybe in the pen as well.

Weird move. His projected arbitration salary is barely above the minimum. Keeping him would be totally low risk (effectively almost free, because you have to spend the minimum on somebody) depth. When you think of how many relievers we cycle through in a year….you need about 15.
I’m guessing that since this is the only announced non-tender, that means all the other arb-eligible guys will be back next year. Some, like Lodolo, Diaz, Stephenson were no-brainers (and now Singer too, of course). Fraley and Moll were probably the most on the fence, along with Espinal who signed to avoid arbitration. Signing him makes a lot more sense now that the India trade broke.
I’m good with this. I think Ashcraft should be a back end bullpen guy.
I liked him. If he pitched last year he could’ve had a chance to come back. But his injury took him out of the conversation.
Why would Abbot go to the bullpen? In a short time he’s already proven he can go into deep innings and has had good success. If any starter should go to the bullpen it’s Lodolo.
Gibaut always looks like he was at a cookout when he got the call, put down his beer, and picked up a mitt. I’ll miss that chill energy.
