[Nightengale Jr] The Twins have signed RHP Alex Speas. Speas spent time in four organizations last season and has a big fastball that can hit 101 mph. He made one MLB appearance in 2024 with the Astros, coincidentally against the Twins.

  1. Unclear what kind of contract this is, but presumably it’s a minor league deal.

Speas is 26 and a reliever. His top-tier stuff has led to a lot of strikeouts in the high minors (12.6 k/9 in AAA ball) but he has also shown significant control issues (10.6 bb/9 in AAA). If he can rein the walks in it’s easy to see him becoming a setup-caliber reliever but only time will tell if he’ll be able to reach that full potential.

  2. Sounds like Juan Morillo who the Twins had back in 2009. Throw extremely hard with little to no control.

It’s a low risk minor league deal so you can hope the pitching coaches can find a flaw and correct it.
