How can the Detroit Red Wings turn things around, and when? Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit joins us on this episode to discuss!

Next, their disappointing loss to the Boston Bruins, including Seider, Edvinsson, Tarasenko connecting for a great goal and a whole lot of not much else in front of Cam Talbot, followed by a discussion of what Derek Lalonde’s team truly is at this point in the year, what’s realistic for them moving forward, potential trade targets for Steve Yzerman to focus on (David Jiricek, Trevor Zegras, Seamus Casey, Bowen Byram?), & more (16:00).

After that, updates as Jim Montgomery is immediately hired by the St. Louis Blues and what this means for Derek Lalonde, as well as Red Wings notes including Albert Johansson’s development, Amadeus Lombardi, and Dmitri Buchelnikov (37:55).

Next, Max’s “Good in the Room” segment covering the rising salary cap in the NHL, how Detroit’s core contracts are shaping up, and Steve Yzerman’s window to grab a superstar like Marner, Rantanen, or someone else to accelerate the rebuild (56:20).

  1. The cope and fishing for positives is always funny to me. I love the wings but this season is already over…worse roster than last year especially not being able to score like last year but that's what happens under the yzerplan when he lets over 70 goals go in free agency and brings in another old guy in taresenko who is a shell of who he was and road the coat tails of Florida's studs last season on top of terrible d and goaltending. Yeah sure great the young kids are scoring now…doesn't matter…the coach stinks and so does this team but Larkin once again showing how good he actually is doing his part as usual with points/goals. Team gets booed off the ice again and honestly all I could do was laugh because just like in the 80s Detroit are the #deadwings. It's hard to watch this roster this year….Yzerman is to blame he is the one getting these groceries but Lalonde isn't an NHL coach either. The guys at woodward amuse me especially McCarty who blindly defends Yzerman like he's still the damn captain of the team hahahaha. That's probably the most frustrating thing out of a lot of this fan base is the stubborn refusal to take the blinders off and stop looking at Yzerman like he's still winning cups as a player/captain…he got way too much credit for Tampa as a lot of those pieces were already there that he didn't draft and wings fans a lot of them still look at Yzerman through the nostalgic lenses instead of being honest that in year 6 his plan still sucks a**.

  2. Every team will have the added cap room, I just don't see free agents coming to detroit when they have no relevancy. They need playoffs fast after last seasons end their is no excitement currently. I hope I'm wrong

  3. Getting a bit tired of the defense bashing, as the team is middle of the pack for goals allowed but almost dead last in goals for (thanks Anaheim). If Wings are so stocked with guys who can't walk and chew gum at the same time (play decent defense AND offense) that's on the GM. As are the pitiful offseason acquisitions. The way we're paying offensively basically means the goalies need to be superb every night to win because the offense sure isn't doing its part.

  4. There's only one way for the Wings to get competitive: Yzerman gets shown the door and Lions GM Brad Holmes comes in to build a legitimate roster.

  5. I can see Marco Rossi being an offseason addition.. I highly highly doubt that the wild would trade him mid-season. Since he's only getting about 800k right now.. But they definitely might not want to pay him this offseason 7-8 million a year

  6. Hell no to Zegras! This team is too soft as it is. You need guys like Perron in a locker room with a coach like Lalonde who has zero fire. Main reason to keep him around is a better draft pick but what a long and painful season that will be with him behind the bench the rest of the year.

  7. Season outlook. Detroit maybe makes playoffs but at least looks better night to night if Lalonde is fired. If Lalonde stays Detroit continues to be outshot by nearly everyone and looks lost and gives the puck up more then Santa Claus gives presents

  8. Hey man, compared to what Tarasenko os providing, I would have absolutely loved Perron still be here. He would carry over more chemistry than either player have on their current team and his presence is clearly missed. Not the main issue here but I miss DP.

  9. According to coal miners, Russian machine is as big as a house, burns 20 liters of fuel per hour, puts out a sh!t load of smoke and noise, and is designed to cut an apple into 4 pieces… but only cuts an apple into 3 pieces

  10. I read an article that Illitch blocked the concept of Yzerman wanting to signi Stamkos to 4 years. Thoughts despite his start in Nashville? Or is the start in Nashville proof Stammer has fallen off?

  11. Best case scenario is trading a Talbot who’s red hot at 50% retention to a contender who’s cash strapped like an avs team for a 1st + and start making room for some kids while yes been saying for a while, trade for a young player with upside like a zegras or whomever that maybe be and end up with a top 4 pick this draft and bounce back and be playoff contenders and hopefully on the path to cup contenders like the devils did when they got nemec at 2 and are good again

And to all the talbot lovers yes he’s been great but he won’t be here after his contract ends and I wouldn’t mind going Cossa/Lyon next season… if we’re dealing a 1st I’m protecting a top 10 pick for 2 drafts like flames did with the habs
