Buster Posey hints SF Giants legend Madison Bumgarner interested in joining staff

  1. Idk how I feel about this. On one hand, he’s Bumgarner, and a legend. On the other hand, he’s Bumgarner, and hates analytics.

  2. really misleading headline makes it sound like he’s gonna be in the dugout in uniform. He said Bum was interested in working with the org in some capacity and very deliberately said that he wasn’t trying to insinuate anything.

  3. Bum must have mellowed somewhat since being released by the Sneks. He (and some other players) seemed to think the team had treated him badly. It will be nice if everyone can bury the hatchet.

  4. Oh boy, another boys club. This could either go really well or end up blowing up spectacularly, there is no in between.

Either way, it beats being consistently stuck in the middle.

  5. Sign MadBum. Oh you meant coaching staff. Can MadBum be a coach/DH? I have seen him hit!

  6. Would love to see Bummy come back BUT only if he’s capable of fulfilling whatever position he’s appointed to. Otherwise it could just lead to embarrassment. Got enough of that.

  7. Weird, love Madbum but he doesn’t seem like coaching material, I’m sure he has some good advice for pitchers but I suspect he has a limited ability to communicate with certain personality types. I am not sure what is going with the Giants, are we pursuing championships or nostalgia?

  8. I assume he’ll be a spring training guest and that’s about it. It would be crazy to have him in a coaching capacity with his unwillingness to adapt.

  9. The article says, and logic suggests, that he could be a spring training instructor. People here acting like he’s the new pitching coach.

  10. Maybe I’m alone here but I’d love to see bum coming out of the dugout hot to argue with an umpire over bad calls

  11. Since the article heavily suggests this would be a guest instructor role, I’m not going to worry about something more severe.

Bum is old school, like a Will Clark old school guy. And he’s definitely not very progressive when it comes to analytics.

But Posey isn’t wrong about Bumgarner’s very singular mentality. Few pitchers can speak on authority about pitching in big moments like he can. And maybe he can reflect on things that led to his career’s end.

I also think him working one on one with certain pitchers could be awesome. Working with Webb and Harrison on their mental game, or with William Kempner and his similar throwing angle. I bet Bum and Whisenhunt would get along very well.

But the biggest what if is Bumgarner and Camilo Doval. From the minors to the Majors, Doval just gets into his own head sometimes, and needs to work out of it. Working with Bum, either Bum can share his wisdom about being a goddamned bulldog on the mound…or Bum will mentally destroy him, as savagely as JK Simmons’ portrayal of Milton Berle on *Saturday Night*.
