  1. Interesting that when Dave Roberts was asked about Roki being posted he said no comment. Mike said AJ learned some words in Japanese. I wonder if he is aware Dave Roberts was born in Japan and was there last week with Roki.

  2. Who did Darvish pitch for during his WS appearance in 2017? The entire country of Japan watched Darvish pitch well in game 5 of the NLDS and the team go 24 scoreless innings. I wonder what Roki thinks of this? AJ has to explain cutting 90 million in 2024 and another 40 million in 2025. He has 6 years as a rookie before FA where he can get a record breaking contract. I’m sure he’s extremely competitive. He’s pitched a perfect game and 8 perfect innings for a team that never won in Japan. He’s competitive for sure.

  3. If Darvish was 32 rather than 38 I would like the Padres chance is a lot better. Also if Peter Siedler was still around. If he goes to the Padres they will be competitive for two maybe three years but that’s it

  4. Shildts confidence doesn't mean jack squad tbh he didnt say anything new about the situation. We knew all this stuff before and he repeating what we all know doesn't mean anything. I fully expect sasaki to sign with those damm doyers, and that will feel like the nail in the coffin for me, doyers have the better roster on paper and on the field given the fact that they won the world series… sasaki must want a real challenge if he decides to sign with us, that real challenge is beating the doyers and winning a world series.

  5. Padres keeps talking about being the face what if he doesn't even want to be the face. He will have so much pressure in SD. With LA theirs no pressure and would benefit his career for long.

  6. I still think the Padres are going to take the wrong approach. They are going to try to convince him to be the enemy of Ohtani and Yamamoto. Which is basically like trying to convince him to be the enemy of Japan. His focus is on him personally being the best pitcher in the world he has no motivation to try and derail Ohtani and Yamamoto. Which is why I honestly believe if he doesn’t sign with the Dodgers it will likely be with a team in the AL that won’t be seen as a direct rival to the Dodgers. I can honestly see the Mariners or the Angels before I can see the Padres. Unless Roki has a deep hatred for Ohtani and Yamamoto. Which I dont think he does considering Yamamoto is his best friend in baseball

  7. Maybe AJ can explain to Sasaki and his agent why the Padres did not offer their Cy Young winning pitcher Blake Snell a contract extension, and instead just let him walk into free agency after 3 years?

Meanwhile, it is the Dodgers who do the right thing and sign him to a huge contract, despite never having thrown a pitch for them.

The guy will want to get paid when his rookie contract is over, and the Padres ownership has been taken over by bean counters. Good luck getting them to spend any money in the future.

  8. Just to correct you, Ben. Preller did learn Japanese years ago in order to recruit Darvish. He worked for the Rangers and ended up getting Darvish to come to Texas.

  9. If the Pobres were making moves and trying to get better, I would give SD more credit given their confidence, but they’re basically banking on Sasaki being the only big move. I just can’t see them making any other major move, and their likelihood of retaining a competitive roster given the price of their future FA going higher, I just can’t imagine Sasaki wanting to go to SD, unless he gave them the word already and want to honor it. And for those talking about Sasaki wearing Padres gear, that’s like your grandpa who went to USC giving you USC gear even though you plan on going to UCLA in a year or to. It’s free and your grandpa gave it to you.

  10. I may be wrong but it's my understanding Roki can start demanding more money after two or three years. IF that is true then I have mixed emotions about this deal if the Padres get him. On one hand, no question the Padres are desperate for starting pitching. If they do get him on the cheap then they will still hopefully have some money to get ANOTHER quality starter because they will need one. The problem is, why are they so desperate to land this guy? Hopefully he will be as good as his reputation, but they are desperate to sign this guy because he's CHEAP and that's just one of the things that bothers me about it. Let's face it if he was going to cost what they usually do when they come over AJ wouldn't even be calling him. So now we're in on it because he's cheap and hopefully good and it's understood it's probably between us and LA. If he can command more money after two or three years then he's just a rental, AGAIN, ANOTHER RENTAL. I realize the window to win is NOW for the Padres but it doesn't appear they have money to spend on the rest of the holes on this team so I doubt adding him is going to make much of a difference if they don't plug those holes with some decent ball players. 3 years from now our big money players will really most likely be going downhill so when he does leave I guess it's over anyway. Mostly I'm just tired of these rentals, just because we can't seem to come up with major players of our own. Chances are if we have them for 3 years before he commands more money we will end up trading him after the second year just like Soto for prospects, just like Soto. We gave up prospects for Dylan Cease now it looks like he may also be on the trade block. We gave up prospects for our first batting champion in years. He apparently has no position and is one of the few guys on this team that is tradable that might bring a return so he may also be on the trade block already. Notice a trend here? When they make a trade for or acquire a big name don't settle in with him as a fan because he probably won't be here long. We simply can't afford anyone who is good anymore. So this is the same way this team has been run for years. Just like Adrian Gonzalez and the rest. Same old crap. All AJ is doing is trying to strike lightning just for one year and then this team will go back in the tank as usual. So far his attempts at this haven't worked and I personally would rather see a team built to be a consistent winner with a chance at a world series regardless of how much money they spend. That's what a good GM and a good organization does. Tampa Bay spends no money but somehow finds a way in one of the toughest divisions to be more than competitive. I realize how impressed some people are over attempts like this but it just doesn't impress me. Build a team the way the Astros did, then you'll impress me. These attempts by trading away everyone in the farm system to try and win one time has grown old with me. If we do manage to get this guy my advice to Padre fans is, Don't get too close to him, he probably won't be here long.

  11. AJ IS TERRIBLE… LOL… HE HAS TRADED THE FARM 3 TIMES… SOTO IS NOW A MET.. AND SNELL A DODGER…. HE NEEDS TO BE FIRED…. WHAT DO THEY HAVE TO SHOW FOR IT… HE GAVE BOGARTS A 11 OR 13 YEAR DEAL… WOW.. YOU PADRE FANS HAVE BEEN FOOLED BY THIS GUY FOR YEARS… AND NOW A 170 PAY ROLL 😂😂😂

  12. Even the Baltimore Orioles had enough money for Gary Sanchez and that's a cheap organization. Texas with all the money they have spent on free agents still has that kind of money to spend on a backup catcher and the Padres couldn't spend that to be their number one catcher? People need to face what's right in front of them. You may not trust their words but you CAN trust their actions, OR IN ACTIONS. If your window is now, and the Padres window IS now, why would you go so cheap on a starting catcher that you saw in action for one season already? The window is NOW and they still have to watch their pennies. Do you think he would rather be a backup catcher for Texas or a starter for the Padres? Obviously the Padres either didn't bother making an offer OR that offer was just insulting. Either way the Padres will keep searching for a catcher they can afford while at the same time try to acquire what they hope to be a one or two starter in their rotation. Makes no sense but, WHAT'S NEW ?
