Great great great episode from Q today talking about analytics vs eye test and talks about AP's call to punt on our 30 last game. Even has Lincoln Kennedy give a take too.

  1. Can you summarize? I usually listen to silver and black today. I stopped listening to Q when he kept giving mcdaniels passes and not blaming him for most of our woes.

  2. Summary for those who don’t want to listen:

Q basically says analysics should be included when talking about certain situations like when to go for it on 4th or when to punt, but they don’t say everything. The eye test also needs to be included. Analytics don’t do show momentum, who is in the game, how the team has been playing or how even the defense has been playing . Q also uses Brandon Stanly (former chargers HC) as an example of someone who always went by analytics but it bite him in the ass plenty of times. Dan campbell was brought up as well since he’s everyone favorite coach to compare AP too. Campbell didn’t think his D could stop Green Bay last game so he rolled the dice and went for it.

Looking at the bucs game, there was 12 minutes left, it was 4th and short on our own 30 and the analysics say go for it. What the analysis didn’t see is that the defense had 3 turnovers, bucs offense was bleeding after their 1st two drive and AOC was just knocked out of the game. Taking all that into consideration, the call to punt wasn’t a bad call.

Lincoln kennedy had a take as well. He said he understands it’s part of the game but he hates them ( really just his opinion). He says coaches know what their players can do and says the eye test is better used in game time situations.

Whew. Sorry for any grammar or spelling errors.

  3. Year 2 of AP and dude still sucks balls at game management. He obviously is not learning. We hired a “game manager” coach. wtf is he doing? Burns timeouts for no reason. Puts the punter out there, burns timeouts. Changes his mind. The game moves too fast for him. This team is really really bad. Not just players, the coaches are horrendous! The decisions they make in game are horrid! And to top it off, they don’t learn from them. I’m not convinced this staff has the knowledge to coach a young QB properly. If you bring this staff back next year and expect a different result other than bottom feeders, I have a bridge to sell you.

  4. People don’t want to hear that AP coaches for the team he has and not the team everyone wishes he had. We don’t have quaterbacks that can get the job done. Our special teams and defense are more likely to make a play than our offense.

  5. Where I somewhat agree with he premise of AP needing more seasoning in specific game management situations (time out use, when to go for it on 4th etc.) a lot of the ‘cowardly’ punts he’s opted into at the time I have very little issue with the punt when watching the game. The two in particular were in games where the defence had really found a groove, and both times the offence wasn’t really humming in a way that gave me any confidence that they’d pick up the 4th down conversion in the alternate universe where we go for it.

I think our bread is buttered on the defensive side of the ball, and generally APs decision making in close games has always been ‘let the defence win it for us here’ which has been consistent. Given our defence is more talented and generally better performing I can see this perspective and makes the analytics around it seem less damning then the titles of “these two punts are the most ‘cowardly’ by the metrics since this has been tracked”.

I think with a better QB and offensive line, maybe AP decides to go for it in those scenarios, but I’m fairly apathetic at this point in terms of giving him another year vs going a different direction, which was not my sentiment heading into the year. At the start of the year I was on the AP hype train and expected him the be the HC at a min for 2 seasons
