[Braves] Braves Select Two Players in Rule Five Draft:

  1. first time since 2017 the Braves have made a selection during the major league R5 stage (not to be confused with the minor league R5 stage, where you don’t have to put the player on your active roster). My understanding is basically you pay $100K for each pick and then have to keep the player on the active roster for the whole year, or else they get put on waivers or, if unclaimed, go back to the original team.

Most of these players can’t hack it for a full year at the majors and get returned, but the likes of Anthony Santander, Garrett Whitlock, and Mark Canha were once R5 picks and the Red Sox and Cardinals got good relievers that way last year. Basically, these are cheap lotto tickets.

Cairo is bleh – extremely light hitting, though he’s got multi-positional versatility so who knows, maybe he’ll stick in the Zack Short/Luis Guillorme role.

Pilar actually seems intriguing (though obviously if any of these guys were *really* intriguing their teams would just stick them on the 40-man). Great strikeout rates this year, and two of his three pitches grade out as above-average by Stuff+, at least in his brief Triple-A sample. He can fight it out for the last spot in the bullpen in Spring Training.

  2. Cairo is the son of former MLB player and current bech coach for the Washington Nationals, Miguel Cairo. Pilar has been absolutely killing it in the Dominican Winter League with Gigantes del Cibao: 21 IP, 3.00 ERA, 27 Ks, 2 BBs and a 0.811 WHIP.

  3. This is the first time I’ve started being concerned about next year. There’s a reason why contending teams don’t tend to make moves in the rule 5 draft. In what world does a World Series caliber team carry both of these guys on the roster all next year?

Could they really be trying to reset the luxury tax? I was doubtful, and I still am, but if that’s the plan then this will definitely be the first real sign of it in hindsight.
