Nick Kyrgios is currently gearing up for a highly-anticipated return to tennis at the 2025 Australian Open, but he has still had time for a discussion with Piers Morgan.

Kyrgios is back on the court ahead of the Australian Open, with the home favourite set to use the Brisbane International to prepare for the Grand Slam.

The former tournament gets underway in Melbourne in mid-January, with the latter starting later this month.

Kyrgios hasn’t played competitively since the 2023 Stuttgart Open, with wrist and knee injuries keeping him off the court.

But he boasts seven ATP Tour titles and over 200 wins, with the 29-year-old having once reached number 13 in the world.

Whether or not he can remain fit until Wimbledon remains to be seen, but the controversial figure has now discussed the iconic Grand Slam with Morgan.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Good Trouble podcast, Morgan revealed details about his lifetime ban at the tournament, telling Kyrgios: “I trained on the Wimbledon newspaper, so I covered the Wimbledon tennis.

“One of the first scoops I ever had was that I infiltrated security at Wimbledon tennis. I got into the Royal Box. I got into the players’ dressing room, I was 19 and I got banned for life from the Wimbledon tennis club.

“The chairman Buzzer Haddington wrote to the newspaper’s editor and said I would never be allowed to cross the hallowed turf again.

“But I was given a lifetime ban for exposing genuine security issues. I managed to literally be having a gin and tonic in the Royal Box on a match day during the tournament.

“I got into the players’ dressing room and was talking to players. It was nuts. It wouldn’t happen now but at the time it was exhilarating.”

Piers Morgan says how he truly feels about Wimbledon amid ban

Kyrgios says the US Open is the most fun to play, although his best Grand Slam result did come at Wimbledon in 2022.

The Australian reached the final at SW19 but lost out to Novak Djokovic, in what is their most recent meeting on the court.

For Morgan, however, it is the London-based tournament that stands out from all the others across the tour.

“What Wimbledon means to people is that it’s for everyone, whether you love tennis or not, everyone is aware of Wimbledon and what it means, and the clotted cream and the scones and the Pimms and the bands and the royal family coming in and Cliff Richard singing his songs,” said Morgan.

“There is a certain magic about Wimbledon which no other tournament has and that’s what makes it a special thing. Not just for the players but also the British people and tourists.”
