Alexander Zverev continued his resurgence towards the top of the ATP rankings in 2024 with several big performances.

Beginning the year as world number seven, Zverev made huge strides in 2024 as he finished the season as the number two ranked player in men’s tennis.

The clay court season was again a big help for the German, as Zverev won the Italian Open, his first Masters 1000 triumph since he took home the Cincinnati Open title three years prior.

He followed up his strong week in Rome by reaching his second Grand Slam final, as Zverev lost to Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros.

He then continued to impress during the remainder of the season and Zverev won the Paris Masters, to cap off a strong year.

Ahead of the 2025 ATP season, where he will no doubt be looking to take a further step forward, he has been told the Grand Slam that he should’ve won this year.

Alexander Zverev’s girlfriend Sophia Thomalla tells him he ‘should’ve won’ the 2024 Australian Open

Speaking on Zverev’s A BIS Z podcast, his girlfriend Sophia Thomalla told him the Grand Slam he should really have won in 2024.

“He should have won the Australian Open,” she said.

“Two sets ahead against [Daniil] Medvedev you should have won this.”

Zverev battled his way to the last eight in Melbourne this year, winning deciding set tiebreakers in both the second and fourth rounds.

There he faced off against one of the favorites for the tournament, as Zverev shocked Carlos Alcaraz, advancing to the semis for the first time since 2020.

Medvedev stood between him and a first Slam final in Australia, and he took the first two sets to put him within touching distance of his goal.

He then lost two heart-breaking tiebreakers that could’ve clinched his spot in the final before losing the deciding set 6-3.

It was a tough defeat to take, as the German spurred yet another shot at Grand Slam glory, but he didn’t let that get him down as he continued to impress throughout the remainder of the season.

Thomalla has now revealed her highlight of Zverev’s 2024 campaign.

“The best moment when I was there was Paris,” she said.

“The first Masters we won together, kind of.

“It was the best moment and a great ending to a kind of successful year.”

How close has Alexander Zverev got to winning a Grand Slam?

Again, he came so close in 2024, as he lost a five-set thriller in the French Open Final, and was a tiebreak away (twice), from reaching the final in Australia.

It seems as if Zverev has done everything but take home a Major title, but just how close has he actually been to winning a Grand Slam?

Back in 2020, Zverev was just two points away from winning the US Open title, before he lost to Dominic Thiem in a fifth set tiebreaker.

Having led by two sets to love, the German let the lead slip before battling back once more in the fifth set.

It was the Austrian who held his nerve, however, as he won his first and only Major title at Flushing Meadows against his friend Zverev.

Zverev has never been closer to winning a Grand Slam title, but will be hoping that 2025 is the year that he finally gets his hands on a Major.

The 27-year-old will begin his Grand Slam campaign at the Australian Open which begins on January 12.
