I thought it was interesting today when Fitzgerald said they want Nemec working on defense in the AHL, positioning, thinking the game, understanding situations and when he has help, etc. And pointedly he said we don’t need offense from Nemec we have enough offense.
I don’t know if they are thinking the same way with Casey or it’s a different player with different traits. Just thought it provided good context to what they are looking for in the AHL stints.
I was listening until you said moving on from Dougie lmao. Dougie isn’t going anywhere and we’d be boneheads to even try to move him.
Nemec is and will be a fantastic defenseman. He’s got talent on both sides just like Casey and he’s better defensively imo. Us having 2 “future stars” in the AHL getting to develop isn’t a bad thing. We are extremely lucky right now to have the ability to let these guys develop at a better pace than just being thrust into the NHL. I wouldn’t be opposed to trading Nemec but it would require one hell of a young star coming back our way. Which is VERY unlikely in today’s NHL. There’s no reason to move him otherwise.
Right now Nemec and Casey having time to cook is perfect. Defensemen typically take longer to develop anyways so having them spend a year in the AHL is the best option. Then we can see where the defense/contracts are at at the end of the year
