[Kollmann] So basically, if I’m interpreting this correctly, the Browns just converted one of Watson’s void years into a real year, but didn’t add any new money. This is so that they can get rid of him after next season, NOT keep him longer like some have speculated. [cont.]

This is so that they can get rid of him after next season, NOT keep him longer like some have speculated. This move means not only can they can get cap relief via the insurance policy on his sizable 2025 salary (which could be worth A LOT if he misses around 60-70% of the season)….but it also means that if they designate him as a Post June 1 (2026) cut after the 2025 season, it would spread the hit over 2026 AND the new “real” year on the deal in 2027. So all in all, in theory, this would take the dead money hit for cutting him after next season from 70M+, down to somewhere in the low 30s. That’s doable.](https://x.com/BrettKollmann/status/1872758900371689630)

This is what I was hoping it was about. (In general terms. I don’t understand the cap well enough to have hoped for this specifically.)
There’s light at the end of the tunnel!!
People that thought this was done to keep him around longer have neither brains nor eyes. Good grief. The dude is awful and they’re doing everything they can to cut ties as soon as realistically possible.
Also makes him much easier to trade, which is what everyone is missing.
And Im aware you will say “who would trade for him?” But there are teams still who would and there are also teams with situations where getting value in a trade that includes Watson, maybe dumping some of their contracts in the deal for a rebuild, and then cutting Watson would be easy for them and lessons the burden of the post trade money for the Browns.
Yeah, this was my read yesterday as well fwiw.
I just can’t support him.
You mean all the “expert fans” in the other threads had no idea what they’re talking about? No way….
This is exactly what it is about. We just live in a world where the “journalists” say whatever the agents tell them to say, and in this case Watson’s agent wanted it to sound like he brokered some kind of major deal for Deshaun that means we’re committed to him. But we are definitely not – he’s probably our bridge QB for whoever we are drafting next year and then he’s gone after the 2025 season.
Or this restructure gives us a snowball’s chance in hell of trading him to Charlotte or Atlanta or some team like that (along with a high draft pick, probably).
This is a smart move and the best path forward. The Browns are moving on from Watson.

Hypothetically speaking, what happens if he gets hit by a bus?
In my house we call that “funny math”
