4 Reasons the Flyers Shouldn’t Re-Sign Noah Cates in 2025

  1. Even ignoring the recency bias of his hot streak, Noah Cates seems like the kind of analytics darling that we’d let walk, then he ends up on Florida or Carolina and blossoms into a great pickup.

But if he is re-signed, the Flyers need to start addressing the logjam of forwards they have. How can we rebuild when our top 9 is essentially set for the foreseeable future? Someone needs to move out if we are going to start letting Luchanko and Tuomaala get NHL looks in the near future.

    * Couturier, Tippett, Michkov, Konecny and Cates (if re-signed) would not be going anywhere. Brink, Foerster, Farabee, and Laughton are potential trade chips, but not immediately leaving the team. That’s a top 9 of players already.

    * Plus Frost, Hathaway, and Poehling are here are least in the remaining short term.

  2. Mehhh. Get rid of Cates to save the salary cap and hinge your hopes that he’ll land a mid-second round pick that will turn into a Cole Hutson caliber player? Quite a stretch. And the whole: “get rid of him for the next man up” philosophy. Who’s next? This is a team among the worst organizational center depth in the league and you want to trade a player with a few years of his prime left at fairly low cost for the position? I’m inclined to hold onto him. Ship the more established veterans.
